COMMENTARY ON THE LIVES OF THE PATRIARCHS

Patriarchs of the Seventy-third Generation:
Dhyana Master Baiguang (White light) Deming (Brilliance of Virtue) (continued)

Lectured by the Venerable Master Hua on September 8, 1985
English translation by Bhikshuni Heng Yin

[Note: This part of the lecture was not recorded on tape. The following commentary is taken from the notes of Upasika Guo Jie Chen, who was present at the lecture.]

A verse in praise says:

It's raining, but the sun comes out;
The stones are slippery but the road is clear.
He stubs his toe;
The bright moon shines in the windows.
It's still the same old Ye Mountain,
But the wick protrudes from the lantern.
His laugh shatters the void.
Flowers bloom on an iron tree.

Commentary:
It's raining, but the sun comes out; / The stones are slippery but the road is clear. The sun comes out during the rainfall. The stones are slippery, but the road is clean and easy to walk upon. These opposites serve to break people's attachments.

In a moment of carelessness, he stubs his toe; / The bright moon shines in the windows. This is a scene of Nature.

It's still the same old Ye Mountain, / But the wick protrudes from the lantern. This is impossible. If the wick comes out of the lantern, the fire will go out.

His laugh shatters the void. Dhyana Master Baiguang Deming has achieved a tranquility of mind similar to an extinguished fire. Upon completing his work of teaching beings, he enters perfect stillness. However, his laugh breaks space apart.

Flowers bloom on an iron tree. An iron tree blooms only once in a very long time. This symbolizes that Master Baiguang's state of mind is extremely rare. He was able to achieve the impossible.

Another verse says:

Ten thousand rays of white light shine through space.
Everyone finds refuge in the mutual brilliance of the sun and moon.
In the fields and gardens of Venerable Kegui of Ye Mountain,
He makes the ocean of his nature crystal clear, using his foundations in Bodhi.
His laugh shatters the void; nothing is attained.
He stubs his toe—what's the big deal?
To be my equal, you must be able to throw down the brush and pass away.
If you can achieve this, we can walk together.

Commentary:
Ten thousand rays of white light shine through space. Dhyana Master Deming's radiant effulgence lights up all of space.

Everyone finds refuge in the mutual brilliance of the sun and moon. Everyone looks up to and takes refuge in the Dharma he speaks, which is the Dharma door of the mind ground.

In the fields and gardens of Venerable Kegui of Ye Mountain, / He makes the ocean of his nature crystal clear, using his foundations in Bodhi. In Venerable Kegui's fields, Venerable Deming develops the ocean of his nature and is able to make it clear and pellucid because of his past foundations in Bodhi.

His laugh shatters the void; nothing is attained. His laugh bursts the seams of space, but there is nothing at all. Since space has nothing to it, how could there be anything in space?

He stubs his toe—what's the big deal? What's so strange about stubbing one's toe?

To be my equal, you must be able to throw down the brush and pass away. If you want to be my fellow cultivator, you must be able to cast down the brush and die on the spot.

If you can achieve this, we can walk together. If you are capable of that, we can walk hand-in-hand as fellow cultivators.

(The End)
