Some people are promiscuous and create the karma of lust. What do I mean by "the karma of lust?" It means being wanton, or promiscuous. For instance, although a man may be already married, he still wanders around looking for a woman to engage in sexual activity. Or there may be a married woman who looks for another man, hoping to have sex with him. These people will fall into the hells in the future. Which hell? They will fall into the hell of Molten Copper. The hell of Molten Copper is truly inconceivable and marvelous.

The molten copper is actually a melted chunk of burning copper, but when a man looks at it, it appears as the woman he loved the most in his past life. He runs over to hug her, for this woman isn't wearing any clothes, and she looks even more lively than a strip-tease dancer, but suddenly as he hugs her, he finds that he cannot let go of her, and his body is burnt to charcoal. Wouldn't you say this is hard to take? Even though it is hard to take, he still has to endure it. This is the retribution of molten copper, for a man who is promiscuous and indulges his desires.

What happens to a woman who is fond of lust and desire? When she looks at the molten copper, it appears as the man whom she once liked the most; so immediately , she runs forward and hugs him. Once she hugs him, she becomes aware that the contact is painful and unbearable, but she has no way to avoid it. She can't get away from him and she is burnt to charcoal, and she smells very foul.

These are the consequences for the men and women who indulge in sexual misconduct.

After hearing this, some of the audience may be saying "Really? Is it true?"

Well, if it couldn't happen, then what's to stop you from trying it out?

If you tell lies, what kind of offense will you get? You may have to go to the hell of "Pulling Out Tongues" where your tongue will be severed, so that you can't talk in the future. Your tongue has been sliced off! What do you think happens to those who like to take intoxicants?

If you like to drink(wine), in the future you will go to hell where you suffer from burning in "fire wine". People have these kinds of retxibution because of the karma they have created If you want to speak extensively about it, it is limitless and boundless. Therefore it is said that "The sea of karma is inconceivably vast and great."

Living being's' suffering and joy arise from deeds, the suffering and bliss of living beings arise from karma.

These truths the Buddhas can demonstrate, The Buddhas are able to instruct living beings about principles such as these, and can bring them to understand cause and effect.

And the King called Flower Banner is aware of these principles. Kinnara King "Flower Banner" can understand these principles and therefore understand the method for liberation.

Buddhas' psychic powers are unceasing; In all directions, the earth constantly trembles. Although no living beings are aware of it, only Vast and Powerful can ever understand.

The Buddhas of the ten directions have same awesome spiritual power. "Unceasing" means non-stopping. All Buddhas of the ten direction turn the great Dharma wheel and use all kinds of wisdom light to teach and transform living beings and cause them to become enlightened. They turn the great Dharma wheel eternally, without stopping. It is therefore called "the ever-turning Dharma Wheel."

In all directions, the earth constantly trembles. Sometimes, if the earth quakes, it is the Buddha manifesting his spiritual power. And sometimes it is a demon showing his spiritual power. The Buddhas and Bodhisattvas reveal their spiritual power in order to let living beings realizel that the world is impermanent, and changing. The demon, however, shows his spiritual power because he wants to delude living beings so they enter the door of birth and death, leave the Bodhi Resolve behind, and be come one of his retinue.

Although no living beings are aware of it, no living beings can understand the many kinds of states and principles. Although all Buddhas constantly benefit living beings, they still do not recognize the kindness and compassion of all Buddhas. Only Vast and Powerful can ever understand. This is a state of the Kirmara King of Immense Power, who always sees He reveals the states of the Thus Come One, the Buddha using many kinds of spiritual power to completely reveal the state of Buddhahood, therefore it says the state of the Buddha is clearly inconceivable.

While among the multitudes, the Buddha shows his psychic powers. He illuminates them so that they awaken to enlightenment. He reveals the states of the Thus Come One. Lord of Awesome Power is able to observes this.

While among the multitudes the Buddha shows his spiritual power, means the Buddha turns the Dharma Wheel and teaches and transforms multitudes of living beings in Dharma assemblies in all Buddha-lands of the worlds of ten directions. In each and every Sea-vast Dharma Assembly there are living beings listening to the Dharma. When the Buddha is lecturing, he will manifest all kinds of spiritual powers to cause living beings to get enlightened by themeselves. Thus the text says "Manifesting spiritual power."

He illuminates them so that they awaken to enlightenment. The Buddha radiates great wisdom light to cause all beings to also attain the same kind of light, and likewise to attain proper knowledge and proper views, and in order to get rid of deviant knowledge deviant views. "Great light" means wisdom,--the light of Prajna that shines upon all living beings and cause them to fully enlighten.

He manifests all the Thus Come Ones' states. The Buddha employs many varieties of spiritual powers to reveal the states of the Buddhas. And thus all these states appear. The state of the Buddha is like empty space, that is how difficult is to measure.

Lord of Awesome Power observes this. The Kinnara King Lord of Awesome Power is able to understand this door of liberation.

Moreover, the Kinnara King of Great Speedy Power, who had attained non-attachment and unobstructed vision, universally contemplated the liberation of the "Door to the Realm of Living Beings."

The word 'moreover' means to repeat the meaning of this Avatamsaka Sutra principle, of the sake of the ocean-vast multitude. . Now the Buddha speaks of The Eight-fold Pantheon of spiritual protectors.

'Garuda', which is a Sanskrit word which translates into Chinese as "the Great Golden-Winged Peng Bird." Garudas are able to subdue the dragons. When the dragons happen to meet these birds, they immediately lose all their spiritual powers, and can only stop there helplessly, waiting for these great Peng Birds to eat them. In this world, there's always one creature which can subdue all the others. "When a lion roars, all the animals are subdued." When the great Peng Bird appears, its wings can extend to 330 league (one small league is equal to forty miles, one middle league is equal to sixty miles, and one league is equal to thirty miles ).

From this, we see that even a small league covers a huge area. Therefore, with one flap of the great Peng Bird 's wings, all the water in the sea is gone. Since there isn't any water left, all the dragons are exposed to the great Peng Bird, they have nowhere to hide. The Peng Bird can see them and capture them easily. With one mouthful, he gulps down much of the dragon community, just like a person eating noodles.

That is why the dragon's lineage is always near extinction, because the Peng Bird is extremely large, and needs to eat a lot in order to get full. One small dragon is not enough to fill up his stomach. How many more dragons does it take to fill up a large Garuda's stomach? He needs to eat several big dragons in order to get full. And since these birds keep on eating the dragons, it's not surprising that the dragons' lineage was nearing extinction.

The Dragon King could not endure it anymore, and he went seeking for help, but no avail. Finally, the dragon went to seek help from the Buddha at the Dharma-Assembly. The Buddha agreed to help by giving the dragon his precept robe. He told the dragons to distribute it among themselves, so that in the future, the Peng Bird would not be able eat them. And it really worked! Once they were covered by the Buddha's sash, the Peng Birds were unable to see the dragons anymore. The Peng Birds, however, had nothing to eat and would soon starve to death.

The Peng Birds went to see the Buddha because they suspected that it might be his spiritual power that prevented them from eating the dragons. They asked the Buddha, "World Honored One, since you don't allow us to eat the dragons, we will starve to death. You can't call this a practice of kindness and compassion. You are kind and compassionate towards the dragons, but not towards us. You have no compassion for us, and we will soon die of hunger. This proves that the Buddha's kindness and compassion are not pervasive." This is how the Peng Bird tried to reason with the Buddha.

The Buddha said, "Very well, from now on during lunch time, I will instruct my disciple to give you some of their food. You may eat their food, but only on the condition that you can't eat any more dragons. You must become vegetarians, and recite the Buddha's name from now on.

So the great Golden-winged Peng Birds took refuge with the Buddha and become one of the Eight-fold Spiritual Pantheon. In this way, the dragons can preserve their lineage, and on the other hand, the Garudas still have food to eat. That's why during lunch ceremony, left-home people make offerings to the Peng Birds.

They recite a verse that goes like this:

"To the Great Golden-winged Peng Bird,
To the multitude of ghosts, spirits, and
To the Rakshasha mother and all her children,
May you all be filled with Sweet Dew.

This is the story behind our daily offering to the great Golden-winged Peng Birds.
