IN REMEMBRANCE OF MY KIND TEACHER

◎Guoying Luo

The Buddhas' boundless power,
my Teacher's infinite kindness...

I have changed a great deal in the fifteen or so years since I came to America from Taiwan. From being a chronically ill person who loved meat, I have become a healthy vegetarian. From being very selfish, I have come to enjoy helping others. From being competitive and proud, I have become humble and tolerant. This character transformation and breakthrough, though not perfect, has happened as a result of studying from the Venerable Master, taking refuge in the Triple Jewel, and listening to the Buddhadharma.

Ten years ago, the doctor told me I had a tumor the size of a chicken egg. in my uterus Because it bled profusely at regular intervals, it was necessary to remove it surgically. But knowing of the Buddhas' boundless power and my Teacher's infinite kindness, I bowed faithfully to the Buddhas and sincerely prayed to the Master to heal my illness and dispel my karmic obstacles whenever I went to the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas to attend a Dharma session. I also resolved to become vegetarian, to avoid meat and pungent plants, to sincerely bow various repentances, to change my bad habits, to set creatures free and nurture blessings, and to create extensive wholesome affinities. Half a year later, a second medical check-up showed no trace of the tumor, and surgery was no longer needed. This miraculous recovery, which gave me a new life of wisdom and set me on the path of spiritual practice, was brought about by the Buddhas' and the Venerable Master's compassionate and awesome strength.

In order to repay the Buddhas and my Teacher, I vow to help spread the Dharma, uphold the five precepts, and purify my six sense faculties. I shall diligently practice morality, concentration, and wisdom, and extinguish greed, hatred, and stupidity. I shall regard it as my duty to repay the four kinds of kindness above and save those suffering in the three paths below.

May all living beings plant the seeds of Buddhahood; may their Bodhi flowers bloom and bear Bodhi fruit; may they perfect the Buddha Way, end birth and death, and attain the purity of Nirvana. Then they will be repaying the Buddha's compassionate vows to come to the world and teach living beings, and they will be fulfilling the Venerable Master's expectations in propagating Buddhism.
