THE VENERABLE MASTER
A GREAT PHYSICIAN KING

◎ 李果櫻

My brother, when he was one year old, he suffered from an unusual disease. After seeing many doctors, his condition still did not improve. The symptoms included fevers, cramps, and infected tonsils. Because these symptoms occurred so irregularly, my mother was very worried. There were two doctors with different opinions. One doctor suggested that my brother stay on medication until he was twenty years old. However, my brother did not get any better after taking medication for a period. Then my mother took him to the other doctor, who suggested that he stop the medication, because it would have negative side effects on him. My mother was worried and confused. She did not know what to do.

In 1978, the Venerable Master Hua and his disciple came to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. At the time, a good advisor told my parents that the Venerable Master was giving a lecture and transmitting the Three Refuges and Five Precepts at Chaming Temple. My family went to see the Venerable Master and to receive the Three Refuges. Then my mother told the Master about my brother’s situation. The Venerable Master compassionately said, “This kid is OK, don’t worry!” After this, miraculously, my brother got better and better each day and finally recovered fully. I was very young then, and my mother told me this true story. I thought the Venerable Master’s compassion was so vast and worthy of respect. We should study hard to be like him, and not let the precious time pass in vain.

He proclaimed and propagated the Proper Dharma, transmitting
 the single pulse;
He resolved living beings’ eternal hunger and cold.
One can never finish saving beings in the heavens above and
 the Saha world;
With humaneness, kindness, and compassion, he bestowed peace
 among the suffering.
