Here are some of the reports of the first Model United Nations (MUN) conference (March 9-11, 2000) ever attended by students from the City of 10,000 Buddhas. Held each year in Berkeley, California, this is one of several major MUN conferences in the United States. Each of the conferences is organized entirely by university students for high schools in California, other states, and occasionally from other countries.

"This conference made me aware of the problems and troubles that are in the world and of the possible solutions to these problems."

-Phoebe Kuo

"...The conference was very inspiring because I feel now that students can actually do a lot..."

-Virginia Tran

"I read the material sent by the Berkeley MUN, and we also discussed and practiced our skills during class with other delegates. We have written 'human rights' contest essays and a position paper which we sent to the Berkeley MUN."

-Katrina Yeh

"...I learned that as long as you try your best, even people like me, an ordinary kid, can actually make a difference in the world."

-Angel Yang

"... I learned how to communicate with strangers and solve problems together. I learned how the MUN works to solve problems and how important that is."

-Yuhan Kao

"...It gave me a happy feeling that we were actually doing something that could help the world to be a better place, even though it was just a practice conference."

-Zhian Gan

"...the United Nations is where you negotiate and compromise, not fight... I also realized that the adult world is really complicated. Everyone is seeking their own benefits, and the art of compromise is to maximize the benefits."

-Jennifer Kao

"... I now listen and argue even with the radio. I find myself looking through the newspapers finding either truth or fault with the international news..."

-Emiko Ishihara

"I learned how a formal conference is run and how the committee chairperson is able to handle the meeting well. I realized that I have to improve my public speaking skills and keep studying English and care about other countries' affairs. The world is a 'global village', and this will affect us forever."

-Yvonne Teng
