| | The residents of the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas must
resolve to practice the Way. That means you must participate
in the communal work and activities. It doesn't mean that
after you have been a monastic for many years, you can slack
off and just take a nap after you eat your fill, without
contributing anything to the community. If that's the way
you act, not only will you have no merit, you will create
limitless offenses in the Way-place. As it is said, "A grain
of the donors' rice is as heavy as Mount Sumeru. If you eat
it and fail to cultivate, you must repay it by wearing fur
and horns (becoming an animal)." This is no joke! Entering
the monastic life is the loftiest matter, however, you must
be public-spirited. It is not acceptable to care only about
yourself, or to be lazy and enjoy yourself as you please. It
is not okay to be sloppy. If you are, you will not be
allowed to live in the community. The longer you have lived
the monastic life, the more you should be a role model.
Don't think that you can be casual just because you have
been a monastic for a long time!    |
