三十六祖大顛寶通禪師(續)

(本會出版之《佛祖道影》書中記載上人作於或講於1984年1月17日,但據當時在場之陳果傑居士筆記之記錄,上人實講於該年3月17日。)  

本來韓愈是很小氣的,現在他能留兩件衣服,留三封信是很不可思議的。

「一日,告辭而逝」,長慶四年(西元824年)時,大顛禪師向眾告辭,便圓寂了。「壽九十三。著有《金剛經》,《心經釋義》,塔於靈山左」,靈山寺的左面供著是石頭和尚的肉身,抗戰時被日本人偷去做研究品。

贊曰:
澈悟至理 豈拘正偏
揚眉瞬目 一任風顛
語默動靜 妙闡幽玄
昌黎拜倒 衣書紀傳

註解:
「澈悟至理,豈拘正偏」:要明白真正的至理,真理;真正開悟了解的人,是一切一切都是合法的。

「揚眉瞬目,一任風顛」:一瞪眼,一斜眼睛,發脾氣的樣子;不像一般人裝模作樣的,明明要笑,又發脾氣,明明要發脾氣又笑。

「語默動靜,妙闡幽玄」:動也好,靜也好,靜就是打坐;他一舉一動,一言一行,都有禪機玄妙之理在內。

「昌黎拜倒,衣書紀傳」:韓愈那麼有己無人,目空一切,貢高我慢的人,都要皈依他,留衣服及寫信給後人做證人。

或說偈曰:
大顛禪師有來頭 貴族帝胃倒駕遊
良朋善侶互勸勉 知音明志共參究
文公皈命承教旨 庶民仰德叩首求
天長地久無窮盡 白山黑水永悠悠
 

編按:以下「或說偈曰」部份為上人講解。

註解:
「大顛禪師有來頭」:凡是做大官的,或者做皇帝的,或者做國家元首,都不是一般人所能了解的。有的做皇帝,或者做國家元首,做大官的,是從善道上來的,也有的是從惡道上來的。這是大善士也可以做這個,大惡人也可以做這個,有的妖魔鬼怪也可以做這個,有這個天上二十八宿來,也有做這個的。所以世間無論什麼事情,都不是一概而論的,你用一個道理說不完的,沒有辦法大家都一樣的。因為每一個人面孔不同,你怎麼可以叫人的環境遭遇,一切一切的生活都一樣呢?不可以。他多少都有點分別,有所不同的,各人有各人的因因果果。

所以做皇帝的,有的前生是有德行的,那麼到這兒來治國,令這個國家風調雨順,國泰民安,所謂「一人有慶,兆民賴之。」有的要是魔王現世的,他就大殺大砍,殺人盈野,「爭地一戰,殺人盈野,爭城一戰,殺人盈城,率土地而吃人肉。」這就是妖魔鬼怪,所以都不能一概而論的。

那麼這位大顛禪師,他當然是從善道上來的,或者他祖先是陳帝啊,祖上還有點德行沒有盡,做皇帝也沒有做完,他的後人就出家修道了。這也是在這兒跟大家演說佛法,所以很有來頭。

「貴族帝胄倒駕遊」:他是國家的貴族。帝胄,帝皇的血統;倒駕遊,可以說是他不願意做皇帝了,來作一個出家人。

「良朋善侶互勸勉」:他能有藥山惟儼做他的朋友,做他的同參伴侶,互相勸勉;他勉勵他好好修行,他勉勵他不要懶惰,那麼互相勸勉。

「知音明志共參究」:他的良朋善侶,都是互相為知音,互相明白彼此的志願,所以大家一起來參究佛法,研究真理。

「文公皈命承教旨」:文公就是韓文公韓愈,也就是韓昌黎,他很佩服大顛和尚;承教旨,常常向他來請教佛教的宗旨。

「庶民仰德叩首求」:庶民仰德,雖然他名字叫大顛,可是他對人人都有恩德,救人哪,到處去幫助人利益人,當時一般老百姓一定都很仰望他的德行的;叩首求,有的去求他做這個事情;有的去求他做那個事情,都是用一種至誠懇切的心求他。

「天長地久無窮盡」:這位大顛和尚,他這種的風格,他這種的道業,感化人的力量就沒有窮盡的時候。  

「白山黑水永悠悠」:也就像長白山、黑龍江的水,常常不停止那麼的流的,所以你們各位要是研究佛法,應該知道這種情形。

[In Livess of the Patriarchs, published by BTTS, it is recorded that the Venerable Master composed and lectured this text on January 17,1984. However, according to Upasika Guo Jie Chan's notes, the Master lectured it on March 17.]

Basically Han Yu was a stingy man, so it is amazing that he was later willing to leave behind two pieces of clothing and three letters [for Buddhism].

One day, in the fourth year of the Changqing reign period (824 CE.), the Master bade farewell to the assembly and passed away, entering perfect stillness, at the age of 93. His works include commentaries on the Vajra Sutra and the Heart Sutra. His stupa was built on the left side of Lingshan Monastery. Venerable Master Shitou's flesh body was also preserved for worship on the left side of Lingshan Monastery, but during the Sino-Japanese War it was stolen by the Japanese for research purposes.

A verse in praise says:
Having realized the utmost truth, how could he be judged
By the usual standards of "proper" or "partial"?
Lifting his brow or blinking his eye,
He carried on like a madman.
In speech and silence, in movement and stillness,
The profound was wondrously revealed.
The scholar Chang Li bowed in respect,
And left his robe and a letter for posterity.

Commentary:
Having realized the utmost truth, how could he be judged / By the usual standards of "proper" or "partial"? One who understands the genuine, ultimate principle and is genuinely enlightened, is in accord with the Dharma in all he does.  

Lifting his brow or blinking his eye, / He carried on like a madman. He didn't put on a show like most people. Every time he stared or blinked, it was as if he was about to lose his temper. He might look like he was about to burst into laughter yet at the same time look furious, or be furious and yet on the verge of laughter.

In speech and silence, in movement and stillness, / The profound was wondrously revealed. Whether he was moving about or sitting still in meditation, his every word, gesture, and deed conveyed the subtle wonders and secrets of Chan.  

The scholar Chang Li bowed in respect, / And left his robe and a letter for posterity. Han Yu, a man who was so full of himself and contemptuous of others, wanted to take refuge with Master Dadian. Han Yu also left his robe and wrote a letter to serve as testimonials for later generations.

Another verse says:
The monk Dadian had an unusual background.
Of noble birth, a scion of royal stock,
he turned the boat around.
Between good friends there is mutual exhortation;
Knowing each other's sound and understanding each other's
resolve, they investigated together.
Lord Wen took refuge and received the teaching's purport.
The people esteemed his virtue and presented sincere requests.
The world endures for time without end;
The White Mountain and the Black River abide for an eternity.

Editor's note: Parts of the commentary to "Another Verse Says" were explained by the Venerable Master.

Commentary:
The monk Dadian had an unusual background. Ordinary people are unable to understand those who are great officials, kings, or national leaders. The latter may come from good paths or evil paths. Those who have done tremendous good can achieve these positions, and so can perpetrators of tremendous evil. Some are the reincarnations of goblins, demons, and ghosts, while others used to be among the twenty-eight celestial constellations. Therefore, we cannot make general, blanket statements about anything in the world.

You cannot use a single principle to describe everything. It's impossible for everyone to be the same. If people don't even look the same, how can you expect them to have the same experiences and lifestyles? You can't do that. They are all mutually different to some degree. Each individual has his or her own causes and consequences.

Some emperors were virtuous in their past lives and under their reign the nation would be peaceful and prosperous, enjoying seasonal winds and rains. As the saying goes, "The multitudes benefit from the blessings of a single person." If it is a demon king appearing in the world, he will massacre and destroy on a large scale, till corpses cover the land. "When he battles for land, corpses fill the fields. When he attacks a city, corpses fill the city. It is as if the earth were eating human flesh." Such is the behavior of a demonic leader. One cannot assume that leaders all come to power in the same way.

Great Master Dadian, of course, came from a good path. Another explanation is that his ancestor, Emperor Chen, had a surplus of virtue. Emperor Chen had not exhausted the blessings of emperorship, and so his descendant was able to leave the home-life and cultivate the Way. He enacted a lesson in the Dharma for everyone; that's why he is said to have had an unusual background.

Of noble birth, a scion of royal stock, he turned the boat around. Born among the royal aristocracy, he did not want to become a king, but became a monk instead.

Between good friends there is mutual exhortation. He was a friend and fellow cultivator of Master Weiyan of Yaoshan, and they mutually urged each other on. They exhorted each other to practice well and not be lazy.

Knowing each other's sound and understanding each other's resolve, they investigated together. As good, wholesome companions, they exhorted one another and had a close, mutual understanding of their respective vows. Thus, they studied and practiced the Buddhadharma and looked into the truth together.

Lord Wen took refuge and received the teaching's purport.Lord Wen is Han Yu, also known as Han Chang Li. He held the Venerable Dadian in high esteem and often came to inquire about the Buddhadharma from him.

The people esteemed his virtue and presented sincere requests. Although his name was Dadian ("Great Confusion"), he was kind to everyone and helped, saved, and benefited people everywhere. Thus the common people admired and respected his virtue. They came to him and requested his help for one matter after another, presenting their requests with the utmost sincerity.   

The world endures for time without end; that is to say, the Venerable Dadian's practice and his deeds in the Way have endless power to influence people.  

The White Mountain and the Black River abide for an eternity. His influence can also be compared to the Eternally White Mountain, and to the Black Dragon River [in Manchuria] which flows continuously. If you study the Buddhadharma, you will come to understand such circumstances.
