The precepts prohibit the taking of intoxicants [literally in Chinese: drinking alcohol]. Some left-home people smoke, and that's also wrong. The precepts don't specifically say one can't smoke, but smoking is included under intoxicants. There are people who smoke and drink, but the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas dislike the smell of cigarettes. If people smoke in a pure Way-place, the Bodhisattvas will stay far away. People think smoking is no big deal, but the Bodhisattvas don't want to smell the odor. I know how harmful smoke is: it drives the sages away and attracts the demons closer.

For instance, weasel spirits, fox spirits, snake spirits, and other spirits all like the smell of smoke, be it from cigarette, cigar, or opium. If someone takes opium, an opium ghost will follow him. It's not the opium addicts themselves, but rather the ghosts who cause them to crave opium. When an opium smoker exhales, a ghost will inhale and learn to smoke opium. Once the ghost is addicted, it causes the person to crave for more. Thus, the two take advantage of each other.

The ghost makes the human smoke so it can have a taste. After you start smoking opium, you gradually become addicted to it. When you crave opium, you will yawn and shed tears. It's tolerable in sunny days. When the weather is cloudy, the ghost will become more powerful so that your craving becomes more severe.

If you smoke opium, an opium ghost will follow you. Tobacco and cigarettes have their own ghosts as well. People who can't see ghosts don't know how serious it is; those who can see them know that smoking is really inauspicious. Thus, Buddhists should refrain from smoking and drinking.

Do not take drugs. Drugs are also intoxicants since the distort the mind and may cause hallucinations. If you try to quit, you feel very uncomfortable. You don't know this. As result, left-home people shouldn't smoke. However, there are some clever people who claim that the Buddha prohibited drinking, but that smoking is fine since the precepts don’t mention it. They become their own defense attorneys and distort the principles to argue their case. Some ministers and priests smoke and drink. You can say that there are always ghosts and spirits around them.

Moreover, there are externalists who claim they can see spirits, ghosts, and other strange creatures, thereby attracting swarms of ignorant followers. Those people are so gullible that they unwittingly join the retinue of demons, ghosts, and other weird creatures. People who believe in the Buddha will become Buddhas, whereas those who believe in demons and ghosts will become demons and ghosts. Thus, we have to bej very careful in our actions.

Venerable Master’s Dharma Rain

A Collection of the Venerable Master's Rules

Concentrate on the Study of Precepts: Refrain from Evil and Practice all Good

Talks by the Venerable Master Hua
English translation by Shramanerika Chin Yi

For the first five years after one leaves the home-life, one should concentrate exclusively on the study of precepts. What are the precepts? In summary, they help us to "refrain from evil and practice all good." If you can stop doing evil and practice good deeds instead, you are upholding precepts. Thus, after one leaves the home-life, one is still like a student in school. Everyday, one must try to study the Sutras and the principles spoken by the Buddha, so one won't waste time. Not only should you do this before you realize the Way, do this after realizing the Way. You should work even harder so the time won't pass by in vain. This is the duty of left-home people.

If you don't read Sutras and learn the Buddhadharma everyday, you will waste a lot of time. Whether you are a left-home person or layperson, you should wholeheartedly apply yourself to studying the Buddhadharma. Don't just listen to what others say without paying the slightest attention.

After a left-home person studies the precepts for five years, he or she can investigate Chan, practice meditation, and learn the Buddhadharma. This is the basic requirement for a left-home person. One can become a Dharma Master only after ten years of effort: studying the precepts for the first five years and practicing meditation for another five years. You don't become a Dharma Master after two and a half days. You ought to know how to act. When people ask who you are, don't answer, "Oh, I'm Dharma Master so and so." "Dharma Master" is a title used by other people to address you; you can't call yourself a "Dharma Master." Every one of you should know this.

It's not easy to be a left-home person or layperson. Therefore, you should be earnest in studying the Buddhadharma. There are some people in Los Angeles who want to practice the Buddhadharma. Lay people can also investigate the Buddhadharma, instructional talks, and all the Sutras of the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas everyday. We have some laypeople like that.

I started to practice eating one meal a day before I left the home-life. After several decades as a monk, I'm still practicing it. Sometimes when you get sick, you can eat more. That's permissible. If your body is weak or ill or there are other special conditions, you can act accordingly. Otherwise, this rule cannot be changed.

A person has to study for twelve years in order to become a priest or a minister. Similarly, a left-home person must study for a decade to become a Dharma Master.
