Lives of the Patriarchs

Patriarchs of the Thirty-fifth Generation:
Dhyana Master Shitou of Xiqian (continued)

Lectured by the Venerable Master Hua on January 10, 1984
English translation by International Translation Institute

A verse in praise says:

Standing alone on the dangerous mountain summit,
His observation skill and wisdom were both perfectly fused.
He personally received the final instructions.
The master went to visit the lofty one.
How is one able to recognize him?
Among all horned animals, the unicorn has one horn.
The road of stone was very slippery,
Yet there appeared one with great wisdom and ability.

Commentary:
A verse in praise of the Master says: Standing alone on the dangerous mountain summit. The Master stood in solitude at a dangerous place on a lone mountain summit. His observation skill and wisdom were both perfectly fused. The Master contemplated the opportunities and dispensed the teaching accordingly His skill at observation and his wisdom were perfectly fused. Because of his wisdom, he was able to make the best use of opportunities for teaching.

He personally received the final instructions. The Master, in person, received the Sixth Patriarch's final instructions.

The master went to visit the lofty one. He went to visit Qing Yuan. How is one able to recognize him? / Among all horned animals, the unicorn has one horn. Many animals have horns, but the unicorn is unique because it has only one horn, and that is sufficient.

The road of stone was very slippery. Stone is another name for Dhyana Master Xiqian. It was easy to lose one's balance on the roads where the Master walked.

Yet there appeared one with great wisdom and ability. From these roads came a person with great wisdom and great capabilities.

Another verse says:

At the age of twenty, intent upon learning the Way,
He went to visit Caoxi.
He went into the hall, entered the room, and certified to Bodhi.
Upholding the final instructions, he sought further advancement.
With thorough understanding of the mind ground,
He liberated confused living beings.
Coming from nowhere, where is there to go?
Being without purity, how much the less could anything be crooked?
The roads of the Stone City were slippery.
One must be careful and cautious.
He was able to roam freely from east to west in the Dharma Realm.

Commentary:
Another verse says: At the age of twenty, intent upon learning the Way, he went to visit Caoxi. At the age of twenty, Dhyana Master Xiqian of Nanjing, the Stone City, wanted to leave the home-life to cultivate. Therefore, he sought the Dharma under the Sixth Patriarch. He went into the hall, entered the room, and certified to Bodhi. The Sixth Patriarch knew that the Master was a vessel for learning the Way. The Master was a pillar of the Dharma door, and he was a brilliant man. That is why he was allowed to go into the hall and was permitted to enter the room. The Sixth Patriarch transmitted the Dharma to the Master who was enlightened.

Upholding the final instructions, he sought further advancement. Even though the Master was enlightened, he did not have enough experience. Just before the Sixth Patriarch manifested the stillness, he told the Master to follow Dhyana Master Qingyuan Xingsi in order to further his study of the Dharma. Dhyana Master Qingyuan did his best to teach the Master.

With thorough understanding of the mind ground, he liberated confused living beings. The Master had thoroughly awakened to the Dharma door of the self-nature's original substance illuminating the mind ground. He realized that everything is empty and not real; therefore, he was not attached to false states.

Also, because of his realization, he could not stand to lose contact with living beings. He taught and transformed living beings with the spirit of kindness, compassion, joy, and giving. The Master was not like other selfish people who say, "I myself have the realization; that is what counts. Why should I care about others? I am not going to cross over living beings." Such people are selfish.

In Buddhism, Arhats are the selfish ones. That's why the Buddha scolded Arhats and said they are withered sprouts and sterile seeds; they won't achieve much.

Coming from nowhere, where is there to go? The Vajra Sutra says, "The Thus Come One does not have a place where he comes from and does not have a place where he goes to. Not coming from anywhere, there is nowhere to go.

Being without purity, how much the less could anything be crooked? There is no contamination or filth, and there is nothing twisted.

The roads of the Stone City were slippery; one must be careful and cautious. The path that the Dhyana Master from Nanjing, the Stone City, walked on was treacherous. One should be cautious and careful. One can't be off by the slightest bits. One was able to walk to the end of the paths, learned the walk, then what? He was able to roam freely from east to west in the Dharma Realm. In the Dharma Realm, one is able to be carefree and to come and go freely. When one wishes to live, one is able to continue living. When one wishes to leave this world, then one is able to leave. One can roam horizontally or vertically within the Dharma Realm at will. One is able to go east or west at one's own will.
