Patriarchs of the Seventy-second Generation: Dhyana Master Yiyun Xingche

師於崇禎八年生濟南。魏氏子。年十六矢志出塵。禮淮之報恩嵩乳密和尚薙染。聞恩誨曰。但莫憎愛。洞然明白。久之。夜立侍。見霜天一色。鴻雁飛鳴。頓覺冰釋。質恩。恩曰。子可雕琢矣。師掩耳而出。聞一尊宿。舉狗子無佛性話大豁疑礙。禮檀度依和尚。尚曰,江南近曰佛法何似此間。師曰前月廿六離揚州。尚曰。賊是小人。師曰。恐駭聽聞。遂嗣其法。初開法金峰。次主石頭。檀度門下傑出數人。師獨居上也。

註解:

我講的有的地方,還不一定有你們講得那麼好,不過你們生大執著,就希望聽一聽我這個胡說亂講這個聲音。

那麼這一位禪師,義雲興徹禪師,是七十二世曹洞宗的祖師。「師於崇禎八年」:這一位禪師在明朝末帝崇禎八年時,生在山東濟南。「濟南魏氏子」:他俗家姓魏。「年十六矢志出塵」:他在年十六歲的時候,就立下志氣說他要出家,不結婚啦,不找女朋友,也不打電話,也不打電報,也不寫信,什麼都不要了。所以「禮淮之報恩嵩乳密和尚薙染」:禮就是禮拜。他就拜淮之報恩寺,在這個寺就跟他出家了。「聞思誨曰」:他聽見這位道密禪師教誨,他說什麼呢?「但莫僧愛」:說你修行不要有討厭的心,也不要有愛的心,也不要有憎的心。憎就是憎惡,愛就是情愛;不要有僧惡和情愛這兩種思想。

「洞然明白」:他在這個時候就明白了,懂得修行的宗旨了。「久之」:時間一久。「夜立侍」:他晚上站在方丈旁侍立的時候。「見霜天一色」:他這個人一定也就是東張西望的,要不然怎麼會見到霜天一色呢?大概和劉果英那個眼睛差不多。可是人家見到霜天一色就開悟,她見到霜天一色就好冷啊,好冷啊,啊呀!好冷啊!見到「鴻雁飛鳴,頓覺冰釋」:他一聽到這雁的聲音就開悟了,什麼都明白了。不是「唉啊!那個麗娟啊,妳男朋友給妳寫信來囉。」唉!做母親的儘講這些個話,都沒有出息,真是可憐!「質恩」:不是王知恩。這個質就是質詢、請問的意思,糾正的意思;到那兒請驗證一下,就說他見這個境界,怎麼霜天一色,把這個慧劍斬情絲啦,情愛都放下了。那時候看的什麼都沒有了,也無掛無礙了,也不為這個臭皮囊來做奴隸了,這麼一說,看破了,放下了,得到自在了。「恩曰,子可雕琢矣」:他師父一聽說,見他悟出這麼一個境界來,就說是你現在可以造就成一個材料了。

那麼他為什麼「掩耳而出」呢?這個掩耳而出,方才有人說是他不高興了,或者說他還要造就,還沒開悟,或者他已經開悟,不是這麼回事。他掩耳而出,因為修道的人不願意聽人家讚歎的話;人家一讚歎,就很容易生驕傲的心,很容易就生自滿的心,所以對毀譽,都不動於心,不pay attention,不注意。因為他不注意,所以他就堵上耳朵快點走,表示不聽這個;也不是不高興,也不是討厭,就是避開這個譭譽讚歎的話,是這麼樣一回事,你們要特別知道。

這是他師父,你想想看,他師父說的話,那他要不高興,不是欺師嗎?不是滅祖嗎?都像我這個弟子這個樣,天天來罵師父?人家古來的人不是這樣。我現在因為有徒弟迷,所以徒弟罵我也好,打我也好;你殺我,我都認賬了。總而言之,你叫我一聲師父,我給你血,給你肉,沒關係,這因為有徒弟迷。你們懂嗎?

The Master was born in Jinan in the eighth year of the Chongzhen reign period, a son of the family of Wei. At the age of sixteen, he resolved to transcend the mundane. He bowed to the Venerable Songru Mi of Bao'en Monastery in Huai, shaved his head, and received the dyed robes. Hearing Master En's instruction, "Simply have no feel ings of love or hate," he understood clearly. After a long time, he caught sight of the wintry sky while standing in attendance one night. Hearing the call of a wild goose in flight, he experienced a sudden awakening resembling the melting of ice. He sought certification from Master En, who said, "You are now fit for carving." The Master covered his ears and left. Hearing a Venerable Elder discuss whether or not a dog has a Buddha nature, his doubts were thoroughly resolved. He bowed to the Venerable Tandu Yi, who said, "How does the Buddhadharma of Jiangnan in recent times compare with here?" The Master replied, "I left Yangzhou on the twenty-sixth of the past month." The Venerable One said, "Thieves are petty people." The Master said, "I'm afraid to alarm those who might hear." The Venerable One then transmitted the Dharma to him. The Master became abbot first at Jinfeng (Gold Summit) Monastery, and then at Shitou (Stone) Monastery. Venerable Tandu had numerous outstanding disciples, but the Master surpassed them all.

Commentary:

My explanations are not necessarily as good as yours, yet you have become very attached and insist on listening to my reckless and nonsensical explanations.

This Dhyana Master, Dhyana Master Yiyun Xingche, is a Patriarch of the seventy-second generation. The Master was born in Jinan, Shandong Province, in the eighth year of the Chongzhen reign period of the last Ming Dynasty emperor. He was a son of the family of Wei. At the age of sixteen, he resolved to transcend the mundane, that is, to renounce the householder's life. He resolved not to get married or find a girlfriend, not even to call or send telegrams or letters to young ladies. He didn't want any of that. He bowed to the Venerable Songru Mi of Bao'en Monastery in Huai, shaved his head, and received the dyed robes, renouncing the householder's life.

Hearing Master En's instruction, "Simply have no feelings of love or hate." In cultivation, we must avoid feelings of emotional love and annoyance or loathing. Thoughts of love and hate should be avoided. At that point, he understood clearly what the principles of cultivation were.

After a long time, he caught sight of the wintry sky while standing in attendance one night by the Abbot's seat. His gaze must have been roving here and there, or else how could he have seen the sky? His eyes were probably like Liu Guo Ying's. The sight of the wintry sky caused the Master to become enlightened, but it just made him feel cold! Hearing the call of wild geese in flight, he experienced a sudden awakening resembling the melting of ice. The call of the wild geese triggered his enlightenment. Everything became clear to him. "Lijuan, your boyfriend wrote you a letter!" Ah, that's the kind of thing mothers say. It's totally worthless and pathetic!

He sought certification from Master En. He requested Master En to correct him and certify his state. He described how he saw the wintry sky and used the wisdom sword to cut through emotional entanglements. At that point there was nothing at all; he had no worries or attachments, and no longer slaved for his stinking skin bag. So saying, he saw through and let go of everything, and attained self-mastery. He related this to Master En, who said, "You are now fit for carving." Hearing that the Master had at- tained such a state, Master En said, "You can amount to something."

The Master covered his ears and left. Why did he do that? Some people said that he was upset, or that he needed more training, or that he was not yet enlightened. However, that was not the case. It was because cultivators don't like to hear praise. Once they hear themselves praised, it's very easy for them to become arrogant and self-satisfied. That's why they don't let themselves be affected by insults and praise. They don't pay any attention. And so the Master covered his ears and quickly walked off. He didn't want to listen. He was neither upset nor annoyed; he simply wanted to avoid praise. That's what was going on. All of you should know this. If you say that he was upset at his teacher's words, wouldn't that be a sign of "bullying one's teachers and destroying the patriarchs"? In the old days, people did not act the way my disciples do, scolding their teacher all the time. Since I'm infatuated with my disciples, they can scold me and beat me, and it doesn't matter. Even if they were to kill me, I would regard it as what I deserve. In general, all you have to do is call me "Teacher," and I'll give you my blood and flesh—no problem. That's because I'm enthralled by my disciples. Do you understand?
