The Master was a son of the Wu family in Huai. His mother gave birth to him upon waking from a dream in which the Buddha rubbed the crown of her head. At age six, he became a monk under his father, Venerable Qian An Qian. At age ten, he accompanied his father to Jiashanyu, where he showed his character as leader of the novice monks. Later, due to overzealousness, he became morose and unreasonable, laughing and talking out of turn, sitting and reclining at the wrong times. One night while reciting a Han dynasty poem aloud, he suddenly experienced a great awakening upon reading the line, "wedded as man and wife, faithful is their love." From then on, he could immediately understand all those confused stories. He returned to bow to the Venerable Bodhimi, who ordered him to succeed his father, Venerable Qian An Qian, as leader of the assembly at Repaying Kindness, Guanyin, and Perfection of Giving Monasteries. Each time the Master sat on the high seat holding the whisk, several hundred monks would gather around him. The Master's Dharma lectures resembled peals of thunder and flashes of lightning, delighting the assembly. In the third month of the year gengzi during the Shunzhi reign period, he manifested the stillness at the age of twenty-nine. His body was placed in a stupa on Bochi Mountain.

Commentary:
According to the text, this Dhyana Master was quite short-lived. He did not surpass the life span of Yan Zi [disciple of Confucius], who died at thirty-three. The Master died at twenty-nine. He didn't even make it to thirty. Thus, he achieved his ideal early on. Since he had an early success, he returned early. His name was Zicheng, and he was called Dhyana Master Chuansui. The Master was a son of the Wu family in Huai. He was a native of Huaiyang in Jiangsu Province, and his lay surname was Wu . His mother gave birth to him upon waking from a dream in which the Buddha rubbed the crown of her head. She was so afraid in the dream that her whole body broke out in a sweat and she awoke. Upon awakening, she gave birth to the Master.

At age six, he became a monk under his father. His father was a monk known as Venerable Qian An Qian, and the Master donned the robes and left home under his father. At age ten, he accompanied his father to visit good advisors at Jiashanyu, where he showed his character as leader of the novice monks. Though he was only ten years old, he seemed to have the bearings of a leader among the novices. He was outstanding among the Shramaneras. He was their leader, and they had to listen to his orders. Though he was a still a child, he was quite ambitious. He had the demeanor of a leader.

Later, due to overzealousness, he became morose and unreasonable. Because he pushed himself too hard, he went insane. He became gloomy, unhappy and unreasonable, and could not cooperate or get along with anyone. He would be laughing raucously when he shouldn't laugh, and talking out of turn. When everyone else was standing, he would be sitting down as if he were a seasoned cultivator, no matter how many of his elders were present. He had no sense of etiquette. And when others were sitting in meditation, he would be reclining on the meditation bench and taking a nap. Wouldn't you call that eccentric? He did everything at the wrong times and behaved very improperly. So you think it is good to be unruly?

One night while reciting a Han dynasty poem aloud. When everyone else was sleeping, he was reading poetry. But he wasn't reading silently; he was chanting it very loudly. Monks are not supposed to read poetry, but that's what he was doing. What did the poem say? As Upasaka Zhou mentioned, it described Su Wu, who had been banished by the Mongols and ordered to tend a flock of rams (male sheep). The Mongols told him, "You may return to China only when these rams bear lambs." And so he was banished for life, in effect, for how could male sheep give birth? All those male sheep staying together... Probably the homosexuals in the world came from those rams when they were reborn as people. Do you believe that? Go look into it. Find an archaeologist and check it out!

He suddenly experienced a great awakening upon reading the line, "wedded as man and wife, faithful is their love." That describes the complete faith that a couple has in each other. Neither suspects the other. At that time, Su Wu and his wife were like that; they could not see each other, and they suffered the pain of being apart from their beloved. When the Master read that line, he had an awakening. Why do you think he awoke? I don't know. You'll have to look into it. If you want to know, you got to apply yourself diligently and not fear pain, and then you will understand.

There was no way to prove their truth. However, no matter what story it was, he could understand it right away without expending the slightest effort.

He returned to Bodhi Monastery to bow to a good advisor. By that time his father probably had either perfected the stillness and was no longer around. Thus the Master paid respects to the Venerable Bodhimi, who ordered him to succeed his father, Venerable Qian An Qian, as leader of the assembly at Repaying Kindness, Guanyin, and Perfection of Giving Monasteries. Perhaps the Master's father had retired and gone elsewhere, so the Venerable Bodhimi told him to take his father's senior position and lead the assembly. Thus he served as abbot at Repaying Kindness Monastery, Guanyin Monastery, and at Perfection of Giving Monastery. Each time the Master sat on the high seat holding the whisk, several hundred monks would gather. around him. The Master's Dharma lectures resembled peals of thunder and flashes of lightning, holding everyone spellbound and delighting the assembly. The flashes of lightning left everyone in a daze. Everyone was very happy.

In the third month of the year gengzi during the Shunzhi reign period, he manifested the perfection of the stillness at the age of twenty nine. What a pity! He must have been very bright. Heaven is jealous of people with much talent and ambition, and took him back. He died at the young age of twenty-nine. His body was placed in a stupa on Bochi Mountain.
