With an Open Mind, One Can Awaken to Truth
--Introducing Upasika Guoshu Lu

When Upasika Lu of Hong Kong first set eyes on the images of Buddhas and Bodhisattvas, she spontaneously perceived a purity and solemn beauty of profound wonder, and it inspired joy in her. Although she had no understanding of Buddhism, the Buddhist images made a deep impression on her.

When she felt pressured and helpless and in need of spiritual relief, her search led her to Buddhism. She happened to meet the Venerable Master, learned of the Master’s virtuous life, and conceived the wish to take refuge with the Master. She also became very interested in the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas. Finally, after several years, she fulfilled her wish and took refuge with the Master in August 1988.

Yet after taking refuge, she felt that merely being the Master’s disciple was not enough. The important thing was to apply the Buddhadharma in daily life. When she did that, it transformed her thoughts and behavior completely and she felt tremendous benefit. She felt that in order to improve herself, she had to open her heart and actually practice the Buddhist principles once she understood them. She could not let herself be swayed by external circumstances and matters. If she failed to reflect upon herself, she would act in confusion and cause herself and others to suffer.

Having received the Master’s guidance, Upasika Lu has come to appreciate the importance of having a wise teacher. In following the Buddhist path, she has come to realize the need to clearly discern between right and wrong. Even the tiniest mistake could lead to grave consequences. In order to put an end to suffering, she is prepared to advance step by step and persevere diligently in her cultivation. Her attitude toward life is no longer one of lost confusion. She is no longer searching for truth outside. It is difficult to get to hear the Buddhadharma and to meet a wise teacher, but she has done both, and she regards that as the greatest blessing in her life.
