Lives of the Patriarchs

Patriarchs of the Seventieth Generation:
Dhyana Master Weijing Dao' an

Composed by the Elder Master Hsu Yun

Text:
The Master was a native of Jinjiang. His surname was Hu. He left the home-life at Mount Zaiyun in Dehua. First he studied under the Venerable Wuda Xinfa of the ancient state of Hangzhou. He inherited the Dharma from Dhyana Master Y ongjue, and understood his own mind. Initially he served as Abbot at Gushan (Drum Mountain). Later he moved to She Mountain in Jinling. He was renowned in his time. He manifested the stillness on the first day of the fourth month in the year of wuchen (1688) in the Kangxi reign period, at the age of seventy-two. A compilation of his talks was published.

A verse in praise says:
Blowing on aflute with no holes, he sang the melody of peace.
At Drum Mountain and She Mountain, the moon shines in a thousand rivers.
All the sages do not transmit the secret for advancing a level higher.
Letting go entirely, his spiritual light shines in solitary splendor.

Another verse says:
The family ofHu had a son named Dao’an (Peace in the Way).
With his ancestry in Jinjiang, he carried on the lineage. Although he had cast off the mundane after leaving home at Zaiyun,
It wasn't until he "entered the room" of Master Yongjue that he upheld the Dharma ship.
At both Gu and She Mountains, he propagated the teachings.
In the South Sea and the North Sea, he took across the worthy ones.
Like the moon reflected in a thousand rivers, the source flows far.
Like the sun illuminating all creatures, his grace long endures.

Commentary:
Today I won't say too much. I'll just explain these last eight lines of verse, because all of you haven't understood it yet. It goes:

The family ofHu had a son named Dao'an (Peace in the Way). A layman by the surname of Hu had an extraordinary son, who was named Dhyana Master Dao'an after he left the home-life.

With his ancestry in Jinjiang, he carried on the lineage. Jinjiang is said to be Fujian Province. The lineage refers to the Dharma-lineage as well as to his worldly lineage. His membership in the Sangha did not hinder his worldly role, and his worldly role did not impede his role as a monk.

Although he had cast off the mundane after leaving home at Zaiyun Mountain in Dehua, although he had renounced his worldly life and assumed the life of a monk, at that point he had yet to become genuinely enlightened.

It wasn't until he "entered the room" of Master Yongjue that he upheld the Dharma ship. He became a room-entering disciple of Dhyana Master Yongjue, and then he propagated the Dharma and taught beings on a large scale. He was like a Dharma ship within Buddhism.

At both Drum and She Mountains, he propagated the teachings. He was the Abbot and the Dharma-speaking host at Drum Mountain and She Mountain. In the South Sea and the North Sea, he took across the worthy ones. Wherever his Dharma ship sailed, in the areas of the South and North seas, he ferried across the "dragons and elephants"-the outstanding individuals-of Buddhism.

Like the moon reflected in a thousand rivers, the source flows far. His work of propagating the Dharma was like the moon being reflected in a thousand rivers. In a thousand rivers, there are a thousand moons. In ten thousand miles without clouds, there are ten thousand miles of sky. There was no one he failed to transform.

Like the sun illuminating all creatures, his grace long endures. His blessings and grace are like the sunlight shining on the myriad creatures. They are long enduring. Even today when we think of him, we still look up to this Dhyana Master.
