Sutra:
His cultivation and accomplishment for kotis of eons was
inconceivable.
If you tried to find their boundaries, no one could know
them.
He proclaims all dharmas' actual mark, making beings
happy.
This the Spirit Infinite Light contemplates and sees.
Commentary:
At the time of the compilation of the Sutra
Treasury, Ananda spoke this four-line stanza
representing the liberation door of the Fire-Ruling
Spirit named Cowl of Infinite Light. He said that
Cowl of Infinite Light had obtained a kind of door
to liberation. What was it? His cultivation and
accomplishment for kotis of eons was inconceivable.
He knew how the Buddha, for limitlessly many kotis
of eons, had cultivated inconceivably many doors of
practice, inconceivably many spiritual penetrations,
inconceivably many wondrous functionings. In
general, everything about this was inconceivable. If
you tried to find their boundaries, no one could
know them. If you wanted to know the limits of the
Buddha's wonderful functionings of spiritual
penetrations, his adornments with merit and virtue,
"no one could know them." It would be impossible to
what they are. He proclaims all dharmas' actual
mark. The Buddha speaks the wonderful Dharma of the
characteristic of actuality, the wondrous Dharma of
real mark, the wonderful Dharma of having no
characteristics yet nothing not being characterized
by it, making beings happy. He causes all living
beings, upon hearing that kind of Dharma sound, to
be greatly delighted, believe, accept, and practice
in accord. This the Spirit Infinite Light
contemplates and sees. This is the door to
liberation, the kind of state contemplated and
viewed by the Fire-Ruling Spirit named Cowl
ofInfinite Light.

Disciple:
In view of all you said about books, do you think
it's a good idea to take notes?
Venerable Master:
Before you understand, take notes.
After you have understood, burn them.
"When one is confused, a thousand
rolls are too few. After one is enlightened, a
single word is excessive." What is meant by
understanding, and what is meant by not
understanding? When you don't understand, with
regard to the Buddhadharma you haven't been able to
enter the Treasury of Sutras profoundly, and do not
yet have wisdom like the sea. That's when you need
to take notes. But once you have deeply entered the
Sutra Store and have wisdom like the sea, the Sutra
is you, and you are the Sutra. The notes are you,
and you are the notes. All notes have been recorded
in your own nature, and you will never forget them.
Then why would you still need to keep the written
notes? "When one is confused, a thousand rolls are
too few." When you are in confusion, you can read a
thousand rolls of commentary, and you still haven't
read very much. But after you have become
enlightened, a single word is too much. To have even
one word would be a blockage to your own nature. So,
what do you think you should do?
Disciple:
I sometimes wonder if I can hear the lecture well,
since I'm so busy taking notes.
Venerable Master:
The notes you are taking are of the lecture, and you
can look at them afterwards. I know you write notes
very fast. That's why I really dislike the tape
recorder. When there's a tape recorder, no one
writes down notes. It tells everyone to go to sleep.
When there's no tape recorder, people all take notes
and don't fall asleep. For that reason I think the
tape recorder is a very terrible thing.
Actually, if there was a tape
recorder and everyone took notes, that would be best
of all. Then people could correct any mistakes in
their notes by referring to the tape recorder. But
the way it is now, no one takes notes. Everyone
relies on the tape recorder. If the tape recorder
were to die, everything would be finished. There
would be nothing whatsoever, right? Therefore,
people have developed an attitude of dependence.
When we started to have a tape recorder, I felt the
tape recorder was encouraging people to be lazy,
telling everyone to fall asleep. It's there turning
around and around, and probably is jealous when
people take notes, and so it wants to monopolize the
work. It wants to have all the work to itself,
including all people's notes. It says to them, "You
can fall asleep; you can take a rest. I'll do the
work." Probably it wishes to be doubly vigorous and
get others to be lazy. That's why I think it's a
very unfair thing!
Sutra:
All the vast, great multitudes in the ten
directions.
All gaze up at the Buddha appearing before them.
His still and quiet light illumines all worlds.
The Spirit Wondrous Flames can understand this.
Commentary:
The ten directions are the zenith, nadir, north,
south, east and west. Adding the four intermediate
points, which are the northeast, the northwest, the
southeast and the southwest makes ten directions.
All the vast, great multitudes in the ten
directions, so many living beings, all gaze up at
the Buddha appearing before them. Those vast, great
multitudes of living beings are all before the
Buddha, and are gazing up at the Buddha. His still
and quiet light illumines all worlds. The Buddha
emits a still and quiet light, which is light
emitted from within samadhi. The light sent forth
shines upon all worlds of sentient creatures. The
Spirit Wondrous Flames can understand this. This
kind of state is the type of door to liberation
which the Fire-Ruling Spirit named Wondrous Flames
comprehends.
Sutra:
The Muni appears in all worlds,
Seated within all palaces,
Universally raining boundless vast, great Dharma.
This is the Spirit Ten
Directions' state.
Commentary:
The Muni is Shakyamuni Buddha. Shakya means "able to
be patient," and muni means "still and silent." This
refers to the Buddha, who can be patient and who is
also still and silent. He appears in all worlds, in
every single world-system, seated within all
palaces. The Buddha appears in the world,
manifesting in the royal family. Kings dwell in
palaces, and the Buddha appears in the world sitting
in a palace. Also, when the Buddha is seated
underneath the Bodhi tree, a palace made of the
seven kinds of jewels appears, and the Buddha sits
within that palace of the seven gems, universally
raining boundless vast, great Dharma. The Buddha,
for the sake of living beings, speaks Dharma
everywhere, the way auspicious clouds appear in the
sky. He proclaims As-You-Will Dharma, enabling
living beings to be saved. That's why the text says
he universally rains down boundless vast, great
Dharma, infinitely many great Dharma-doors. This is
the Spirit Ten Directions' state. Ananda said this
is the state which the Fire-Ruling Spirit named
(Palaces Like Mount Sumeru in the) Ten Directions
has.
Sutra:
All Buddhas' wisdom is most profound.
Sovereign over dharmas, they appear in the world,
Completely clarifying the principle of truth.
Awesome Light awakens to this and rejoices.
Commentary:
All Buddhas' wisdom is most profound. We could say
"all Buddhas" refers to all the Buddhas of the ten
directions and the three periods of time; or we
could say this is Shakyamuni Buddha. All Buddhas'
wisdom, their Prajna wisdom, is most profound. No
living being has wisdom which is higher than the
Buddha's, nor is any living being's wisdom deeper.
The Buddha appears in the world as a Great Guiding
Master. He unveils all living beings' wisdom,
enabling them to return to the origin and go back to
the source, and recognize their own original face.
The Buddha employs all types of analogies to speak
the Dharma for living beings, helping them to
understand the Buddhadharma. That's why the text
says: Sovereign over dharmas, they appear in the
world. "Sovereign over dharmas" refers to how the
Buddha has certified to the perfect fruition of
Enlightenment. He has totally understood both
worldly and world-transcending dharmas, and so he is
free and easy with respect to dharmas. What does
that mean? It means he has no need to force things,
no need for contrivance. Very naturally and at ease
he appears in the world. He manifests within the
world to enable living beings to open the knowledge
and vision of a Buddha, disclose the knowledge and
vision of a Buddha, awaken to the knowledge and
vision of a Buddha, and enter the knowledge and
vision of a Buddha. He causes all living beings to
open, disclose, awaken to and enter the knowledge
and vision of a Buddha, completely clarifying the
principle of truth. The Buddha's speaking of Dharma
can give expression to true principle. The principle
of truth is unchanging principle. That kind of
principle is the principle which has been followed
from ancient times until the present, in China and
in foreign lands. Awesome Light awakens to this and
rejoices. The Fire-Ruling Spirit named (Sovereign)
Awesome Light understands this kind of door to
liberation, and enters this type of state. For that
reason, he is extremely delighted and rejoices
exceptionally--and so the text says: "Awesome Light
awakens to this and rejoices."
