VENERABLE MASTER'S DHARMA RAIN

SUCH PEOPLE ARE NOT MY DISCIPLES!

The Venerable Master's Talk on August 1, 1993

The second is the one named Lee who came here to leave home. When he saw how easy it was for Fei Da Ma to get rich, he decided to follow in her footsteps. He went to Taiwan and began looking into people's cause and effect in the three periods of time; he told fortunes. How much did he charge per fortune?  The prices started from ten thousand dollars. And guess what else?  He had an even bigger method for getting money.  He told people he was going to construct an image of Earth Store King Bodhisattva ninety meters high at Nine Flower Mountain ( in China). Ninety meters! You can figure out for yourselves how tall that would be!  One meter equals three feet. Ninety meters is two hundred seventy feet tall! Not to speak of building it, I don't even dare think about it. How could one ever construct such a tall image of a Bodhisattva? How much manual labor would that take? How much money? That's why I wouldn't even dare consider such a thing. But he convinced people to shell out money for it; this one gave and that one gave. Why did they give?  They said that people who come out from the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas have cultivation under their belt;  they eat one meal a day and wear their precept sashes. But in fact his behavior was not like that of those belonging to the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas. He said that he was going to construct an image of Earth Store King Bodhisattva at Nine Flower Mountain, but could it really be constructed? I believe that to the ends of future time he will never be able to erect it. All he was doing was cheating people, collecting money from people so he could feed his own guts.

I don’t know how much money he cheated people out of. I don’t know if he kept accounts; he never showed any to me. Nor do I have any interest in knowing the details. However, somebody told me, hearsay has it, that he went to China to build a huge temple that was going to cost between a hundred million and a billion NT. A lot of muddled people in Taiwan contributed to that too; this one gave and that one gave. Wow! But then, it was all over. I don't know where that big temple is located. Don't know what part of space or corner of the earth it's to be found. I mean really! Don’t you see?

I said early on that when left-home people leave the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas, I cannot be responsible for them. That's because it's difficult to fathom people's minds. He behaved so well when he was here. He had the whole act down: one meal a day, no holding money. But once he got outside and saw how pretty bright-colored paper money was, he thought up all kinds of way to cheat it out of people. Well, I cannot be responsible for those who have been cheated by him. I make no guarantees about such things. Why did I ask Mr. Zeng? It's because he was almost cheated by him.

When he was in Los Angeles, when no one was watching he got involved with some of the laity. He became acquainted with this one and that one. He also told people in San Jose that he was going to build a temple, but probably he didn’t tell people how much was needed. He just said that he had that idea and the laity in San Jose resolved to help him build a temple. Take a look, dangerous or not? Hah! I really didn’t know how to handle the entire situation.

I heard that in August he wants to come back. But it's not easy for me to deal with this person. Being his teacher I am really at the end of my wits. He's very obedient and well-behaved when he's around me, but the spiritual penetrations and wonderful tricks he uses behind my back certainly ruin my reputation. To this day I don’t really know where he came from, where he's going, or what he's done in the past; I don’t know anything at all about him. He never told me and I never asked. But he did tell me that former President Bush's daughter wanted to marry him and Baker's daughter chased him, also wanting to marry him. In general, the daughters of US top officials all liked him and pursued him. He also was about to get the Nobel Prize, but now that he's left home, he's given that up. Look at that! Such exaggerations, like saying you patted a tiger on Southern Mountain and scratched a wolf on Northern Peak. Wu-sung caught a tiger, but Wu-sung's talents are nothing compared to his!

And so why did I accept him [as a disciple]?  Let me tell you that I don't get put off by stinking situations. No matter how bad a person is, if he wants to change, I will give him an opportunity to change. If he can change then it was worth it. When those who are extremely evil reform, they become those who do great good; if those who have done great good fall, they become extremely evil. After this, all of you laypeople should be watchful of left-home people who like to fraternize with you. They must be up to no good. If they were well-intended, they would not stealthy and secretive, so that whenever someone came along they stopped talking, but when no else was around they showed their stuff. Didn't you see through that? In Los Angeles, whenever anyone else was around he remained silent. But when he got alone with the laity he came on with a hard sell, cheating the laity.

The Bhikshunis there didn't like what they saw and so four or five of them got together and came to talk to him. “The City of Ten Thousand Buddhas advocates that when freezing to death we will not climb on conditions. But what you are doing is climbing on conditions. You rap with the laity going on and on and on never-ending.” What do you suppose he said? “I'm not climbing on conditions; I have real abilities! Do you understand?” That left the Bhikshunis and the Bhikshus speechless. They had no idea how to retort. Finally, I called him to come before me and I asked him what his real abilities were. I told him to speak them out for me to hear. He said, “Hmm...I...I can cure people's sicknesses.” I said, “How does that count as an ability? Weasels and fox sprites can play those tricks. What's so great about that? How can that be real ability? You don't have true abilities; you just make a show andthat shows you don't have abilities  Would anyone with real ability go around telling people that he had real ability? If you did have true abilities why would you be telling others about them? If that isn't just advertising for yourself, what is it? When did left-home cultivators ever advertise for themselves?  After that he couldn't use his real abilities any more. The laity were so naive, as soon as they learned he was my disciple, they figured all my disciples have real abilities. When he went to Taiwan he really blew his horn saying that I had sent him; that I had personally instructed him to go to China and build a temple; that I know everything he's up to. But those who were ignorant and untaught gave him money, money, money. I honestly don't know how much he raked in. Ok! There's no end to this tale! I just want to let you know that left-home people from the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas have cheated a lot of people. Don't believe that kind of stuff. The City of Ten Thousand Buddhas’ genuine people would absolutely never beg from you or climb on conditions or seek things.

One time he threw a temper tantrum in the Administration Offices at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas. He got angry at a Bhikshuni. He wanted to hit the Bhikshuni, who said to him, ou are always making vows that you want to undergo suffering on behalf of living beings. But at the very least I can see that you are not able to undergo suffering on my behalf. That's one thing. Another thing is that you say you want to save all living beings, but if you can manage to refrain from causing living beings to not retreat from their resolve for Bodhi, you will be doing good. I am a living being, but when I see you, it certainly does not inspire me to cultivate; on the contrary I retreat from my Bodhi resolve. What do you intend to do about that? “ He banged on the table in a great fit of anger and really wanted to strike the Bhikshuni. The nun said, hat'enough. I have something to do and so I leaving. I leaving but I'll be back because I have business with the administration office; I don have any business with you.” He waited there scrowling. He waited for the Bhikshuni to return and wrote her a note telling her that no matter what, she shouldn tell the Master that he got angry at her. Not only was she not to tell the Master, she wasn to tell anyone at all. Look at that! Really fierce tactics, wouldn you say?

I’ll tell you another story. Today I rushed here and although I late, I am still giving the lecture. When the Elder Master Hsu Yun was around a hundred years old , he had many many disciples. Many of them were in their fifties and sixties who had been left-home people for several decades. Among them was one  from Chaozhou. At Southern Flower Monastery, he stole the Elder Master official seal. Do you understand what that means? He wrote a letter and stamped it with the seal. What was the content of the letter? It was written in the Elder Master style and said that he was sending this monk  to Six Banyans Monastery to become the Abbot. The Elder Master knew nothing about the letter. The Elder Master was preparing to send another monk to fill the position, but this person got there first, without the Elder Master knowledge. When the people there saw the Elder Master letter complete with his seal, they assumed it was legitimate. Actually it was a complete forgery. When the monk whom the Elder Master had actually sent arrived there, this person would not acknowledge him, saying that he himself had been given the position by the Elder Master. The monk became very upset with the Elder Master because of that. How could you send me here when you had already given the position to another of your disciples! Humph! That how it went. When the Elder Master found out, he was outraged. And I've told you why I accept disciples like him.

I will tell you something else very true, not only will I accept such human beings as disciples, I accept ghosts and all kinds of weird entities. How about the As You Will Demon woman who had harmed and killed so many people. She had killed ninety-nine human beings. If she killed one more, she would have become a leader of the demon kings. Well, I subdued her. She took refuge and I accepted her. She was outrageous and smelled very bad--worse than rotten fish. That's odor was terrible. No matter where I went, that stench would stink up the entire building. Eventually I saw that it wouldn't work to have her follow me around, and so I stationed her at La-ba-zi Mountain [referred to in The Ten Dharma Realms are Not Beyond a Single Thought in the episode about the As You Will Demon woman as the Crystal Cave of the Ten Thousand Sages on Lui Fa Mountain in Jiaohe County, Jilin Province.] There are many caves there and so I sent her to live in one of the caves. But after she moved to the cave, she cultivated quite well and now she goes about helping people and saving them. Well, I accept weird creatures like that! While I was in Manchuria I accepted eight hundred foxes; ghosts and spirits have also taken refuge with me, as well as dragons, and so how much the more human beings. No matter how bad people may be, they can't compare with how terrible weird entities are. Therefore, you people should understand me. Even Elder Master Hsu Yun, who had tremendous virtue, had disciples who did such unthinkable things. Ok!  And what kind of person am I? I am quite insignificant and so I have far too many disciples who cheat their teacher and destroy the Patriarchs. Today I will only say this much.
