Upasaka Huang Guochiao, who comes from Nibong Tebel, Penang, Malaysia, originally wasn's a Buddhist with proper faith. Then one time in l986 a friend invited her to a Buddhist Association to join in the bowing of a repentance ceremony. The experience sparked her interest and she began to attend regularly to that Buddhist Association, where she learned how to play the Dharma instruments and even lead the Vajra Jeweled Repentance. Although she was still a layperson, not even a vegetarian, she would go out and recite sutras to save souls, and accept their offerings. One time when she was reciting sutras beside a coffin, she heard a weird sound. Another time when she was reciting in a cemetary for someone who had committed suicide, as she watched the siblings of the deceased going through the contortions of weeping and wailing, she realized that they were possessed and she became frightened.
Shortly after that, when the Buddhist Association succeeded in inviting Dharma Master Heng Su to speak the Dharma, he told her that she should no longer eat meat; and that as a Buddhist, she should eat pure vegetarian food. What is more, as a layperson, she definitely should not recite sutras for the deceased and accept money for doing it. From then on, she stopped eating meat and became a vegetarian; and she never again took money for reciting sutras for people. Dharma Master Heng Su advised her to also go to the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas to study Proper Dharma. Her family also took refuge with the Triple Jewel and got rid of the whole row of externalist religion's images that they used to worship in their home. Now they venerate Shakyamuni Buddha, Amitabha Buddha, and Venerable Master Hua's images.
Upasika Huang has always been a filial child. Before she stopped eating meat, her father, who had suffered a stroke that left him paralyzed on one side, would drool all day long. One day Upasika Huang burned incense on her arm, making a vow: if my father's illness can get better to the point he can walk, then I will become a full vegetarian for life. Basically, she did not understand the method for making incense burns on the body and as a result the wounds infected and seeped pus and blood for several months. Thus the incense burn on her arm is a large as five American quarters. The strange thing was that the second day after she made the incense burns, her father was able to walk upright by himself.
After the family took refuge with the Triple Jewel, whenever her father and brothers encounter difficulties in their business, they sincerely seek help from Venerable Master Hua and the problems naturally resolve themselves overnight. And her own liver disease was cured by itself without having to take any medicine. The rash on her body caused by her inability to eliminate poisons also disappeared. And so in l990, she came to the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas where she began taking classes. Later, she volunteered to help in Chunkang Vegetarian Canteen. Now, every day she is content with her life which includies doing morning and evening recitation and reciting 108 Great Compassion Mantras every day, along with her work at the Canteen. She's so busy the time flies and her false thinking has decreased significantly.
