In 1995, Upasika Liang Shuxia came to the Sagely
City of Ten Thousand Buddhas to participate in the Jewelled Repentance
before Ten Thousand Buddhas. She was raised in a family that has mixed
faith in Buddhism and Taoism. After hearing about the Venerable Master
from her sister and reading the two volumes of his biography, she set
up a Buddhahall in her home and began bowing to the Buddhas every day.
Her sister also introduced her to various Sutras and mantras. When she
found out about the inconceivable, wonderful functioning of the Great
Compassion Mantra, she immediately decided to commit it to memory.
Unexpectedly, during a trip to Singapore, she experienced the
inconceivable, awesome spiritual power of that mantra.
That time, Mrs. Liang and her family had gone to
Singapore to take care of some matters. The first night of their stay
in a hotel, her younger daughter had a bellyache that was so severe
that her face and lips turned white. Thinking her daughter was near
death, Mrs. Liang was terrified and hurriedly took out Guanyin
Bodhisattva’s image. She poured water in a cup, knelt beside her
daughter’s bed, and sincerely recited the Great Compassion Mantra seven
times. Then she told her daughter to drink the water. To her surprise,
her daughter fell asleep right away. Upon waking the next day, her
daughter told her that after drinking the water, her pain had vanished
and she had fallen asleep. Since then, Mrs. Liang’s faith in the Great
Compassion Mantra and in Guanyin Bodhisattva has deepened.
When Mrs. Liang met the Venerable Master for the
first time during his visit to Malaysia in 1988, she took the
opportunity to take refuge and become the Master’s disciple. Since
then, she has increased her vigor in cultivation. Her daily schedule
includes reciting the Great Compassion Mantra, the Amitabha Sutra, the
Earth Store Sutra, the Verse for Rebirth in the Pure Land, the Ten
Great Vows of Universal Worthy Bodhisattva, and the name of the Buddha.
Mrs. Liang says that ever since she began studying the Buddhadharma,
she has found peace of mind and her afflictions have disappeared
without her realizing it.
In 1990, Mrs. Liang came with her sister and
daughter to the Sagely City of Ten Thousand Buddhas to participate in
the Jewelled Repentance before Ten Thousand Buddhas and the ceremony
for Bathing the Buddha. She stayed in the Sagely City for a while and
personally heard the Venerable Master’s teaching. She really liked the
pure environment and the style of cultivation there. Considering the
Sagely City to be an excellent place for cultivation, later that year
she sent her two daughters there to study at Dharma Realm Buddhist
University for a year. After returning to Malaysia, the two girls
influenced their father to become a vegetarian. Mrs. Liang’s sister is
still living and cultivating at the Sagely City.
