去年十二月二十八日上午十時左右，來自臺灣的懺雲法師，專程到洛杉磯長堤，問候宣公上人法體康泰。上人敬邀法師參加今九五年由法界佛教總會舉辦的三壇大戒、水陸空大法會，以及明年的世界宗教大會，共為打破門戶之見，團結各教領袖，創造大同世界而努力。懺雲法師則懇請上人回臺弘法。上人自言慚愧，道不足以感人，德不足以化人，實無開口處，只能在法師後面跟著學習。
約半小時談話後，懺雲法師向上人告辭，上人笑說：
沒有辭！我們什麼時候天天都是在一起的，我們不能辭的，都要為佛教努力。我們做同一事，你做、我做，誰做都一樣的，大家不閒著就好。我們不是在這兒搞名搞利的，而是希望對佛教有點貢獻，沒有旁的！
懺雲法師聞言甚喜，與上人共約：「那我們一同弘法利生！」即道珍重而去。

On December 28, 1994, at around ten o'clock in
the morning, Dharma Master Chan Yun of Taiwan
paid a visit to the Venerable Master Hua at Long
Beach. The Venerable Master invited him to
attend the Transmission of the Three Platforms
of Precepts and the great Water-Land-Air Dharma
Assembly to be held this year, as well as a
World Religions Conference scheduled for 1996,
by Dharma Realm Buddhist Association and to work
hard together to unite the leaders of all
religions, shatter party prejudices, and create
a world of great unity. Dharma Master Chan Yun
sincerely requested the Venerable Master to go
to Taiwan and propagate the Dharma. The
Venerable Master said that his virtue in the Way
is not sufficient to move and transform people,
and that he is not in any position to say
anything and can only follow Dharma Master Chan
Yun to learn.
After half an hour of
conversation, Dharma Master Chan Yun bid the
Venerable Master good-bye. The Venerable
Master said with a smile:
There are no good-byes! We
are together every day. We cannot say
good-bye. We should all strive to work hard
for Buddhism. We are doing the same thing.
Whether you do it, I do it, or someone else
does it, it's all the same, as long as no
one is sitting there with nothing to do. We
are not running after fame or working for
personal benefit; we only hope to make some
contribution to Buddhism, that's all!
Dharma Master Chan Yun was
very pleased to hear these words and agreed
with the Venerable Master, “Then let us
together propagate the Dharma to benefit
living beings!" After telling the Venerable
Master to take care, Dharma Master Chan Yun
took his leave.
