Li Hui graduated from Taiwan's Jiaotung University in the same year and class as her husband. After coming to the States, they both earned Master's degrees at UC Berkeley. She stopped her doctoral work due to pregnancy and financial reasons. In 1987, a friend led her to take refuge with Ven. Master Hua during an Earth Treasury Session. The Master named her Guoxiang (Fruit of Fragrance), telling her not to get mad anymore.
When she took the refuge, her eyes already suffered from iritis. After it was cured, she contracted glaucoma and slowly lost her vision. That was in 1988. At first she stayed home to cultivate, but often lost her temper. Later she found that if she cultivated sincerely and calmly, she would vaguely see the silhouettes and colors of objects. But once she lost her temper, her vision would diminish until she only saw darkness. This happened every time.
Since 1992, she has lived at the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas, where the pure atmosphere enables her to concentrate singlemindedly and stay calm. Every day she cultivates with the assembly, attending the morning and evening recitations, the meal offering ceremony, and the Great Compassion Repentance, as well as upholding mantras and reciting the Buddha's name. Listening to the Dharma lectures, she has understood many principles. In the past, her lack of wisdom and congenital karmic afflictions led her to do many regrettable things. She hurt others' feelings, and also left injuries in her nature which are hard to remove. She is grateful to the Buddhas and the Ven. Master for their compassionate instructions, and to all the good friends who have taken care of her at the City, and she cherishes the opportunity to close her eyes and whole-heartedly face herself, experience her life, and know the truth. She wishes that after her eyes get well, she will be able to translate Buddhist Sutras and do more work for Buddhism in order to repay the kindness of the Triple Jewel.
Last January, a layperson discovered Guoxiang's excellent educational background and capabilities, and offered her eye so that Guoxiang could fulfill her wishes. Guoxiang appreciated her kindness, but didn't wish her to suffer an operation or become handicapped. We must undergo the retribution for our own karma. Guoxiang acknowledges her debts, and is vigorously rectifying past faults and cultivating for the future. Her flesh eyes may be closed for a time, but her mind's eye is growing bright. We hope that she will soon attain genuine supreme wisdom!
