Dear Venerable Master Hsuan Hua,
Thank you for the opportunity to participate in your celebration
of the elderly.It was my honor to be included in your
celebration and to be asked to speak after Dr. Li-su Chen.
It was particularly interested in his insights as to be
similarities of concepts between Christian beliefs and Buddhism.
Perhaps in the future I will have the opportunity to know more
about his thoughts.
I also liked the singing of the young children to honor the
elderly.As a grandfather,I have reached a point in life where
the trust,curiosity and innocence of the very young serve as
a daily reminder of the need to work to see that the positive
attributes and opportunities of family,community and society
are there for them,as they were for me.The juxtaposition of
the two age groups served to emphasize the importance of the
elderly as teachers and role models.
Watching the older children mentor and support the younger ones,
and watching their teachers support that mentoring,gave me
a feeling of "just so".It reminded me of my upbringing and
catholic schooling.Their approach was much the same.
Thank you again for the honor and opportunity to visit with
