來聖城以前，持有物理文憑，教育文憑、醫學文憑的顏亞日，教高中物理已十七年餘。他認為，物理只能解釋物質及時空的自然規律。超越物理現象的心靈世界，及眾生心靈對世界現象所產生的影響，是科學無法求證的。佛法可以說明科學，但是科學只能有限地印證佛法。
本著對佛法的誠心與信念，顏亞日決心辭去教職，來聖城當學生，也擔任義務教師。他的同修丘韻宜，也是虔誠的佛教徒，毫無異議地帶著四個孩子同來聖城。他解釋說：「我現在已經四十多歲了，生命已過了三分之二，真要為佛教做事也只剩三分之一的生命。」
「上人育良培德的教育目標，及艱苦辦學的精神，使我非常的感動。」他認為從教育下手，是奠定正法佛教住世的基礎。自小學、中學以迄於大學，是銜接往聖先賢，並培養佛教接班人的一道橋樑。所以他很欣慰自己的孩子都很歡喜在聖城受教育，並接受佛法的薰陶，並希望他們將來能為佛教出點力量。
全家素食已六年的顏老師表示，七年前他的同修首先提議由十齋期改為全素，他卻擔心孩子營養不足而未答應。次年他來到萬佛聖城參加水陸空大法會，親身體會了諸多的感應。他認為感應道交是由心境體現，而非心理的幻象。當年返回馬來西亞後，立即同意全家素食。
目前他在萬佛聖城的中、小學教自然科學和數學。他希望能將學校的科學室逐漸充實，提供學生理想的科學訓練。

Before he came to the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas, Agis Gan was a senior high school physics teacher in Malaysia. He holds diplomas in physics, education and Homoeopathic Medicine. In his opinion, physics only explains the natural laws of the world of matter, space and time. The spiritual world is beyond the scope of physics. Science cannot provide evidence about the influence of the spiritual forces of the inner hearts of living beings on the phenomena of the physical world. The Buddha Dharma explains science but science can only prove Buddha Dharma in a limited way.
Due to his devotion to the Dharma, Agis decided to resign from his teaching post and come to the Sagely City to be a student and volunteer teacher. His wife Hew Wan Yee is also a devoted Buddhist. She had no objection to his decision and brought their four children along with them. Agis explained, “am now over forty years old. I supposed that about two-thirds of my life has passed. I would like to devote myself to Buddhist work for the remaining one third of my life”.
I am deeply touched by our Venerable Master’s great spirit in overcoming all hardships to set up the schools and university, and his aim of instilling goodness and developing virtue in students." In his opinion, education is the way to build the foundation for the proper Dharma to remain in the world. Elementary, secondary and university education serve as a bridge for nurturing Buddhist workers of all ages. Furthermore, he is pleased his children are receiving education and learning Buddhism in the City. He hopes that they will be able to render some service to Buddhism in the furture.
His family became total vegetarians six years ago. He said that seven years ago, his wife suggested that they become vegetarians full-time instead of just ten days a month. He did not agree at that point, fearing that the children might not have enough nutrition. The next year, he came to the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas to participate in the Water-Land-Air Dharma Assembly and experienced many responses. He feels the responses are states of mind reflected in the body, and not psychological illusions. When he went back to Malaysia, he agreed to let the whole family become vegetarians.
Agis is presently teaching Science, Physics and Math at the schools in the City. He hopes to build up the science classroom gradually so as to provide better scientific training for the students.
