宣化偈曰

過去未來及現在
達摩面壁無足怪
離言說相何可道
不立文字紙空白
參得禪時贓誣起
悟透性具放開懷
青原垂足惹禍事
子孫萬代坐蓮臺

宣化偈曰

你看這個禍事大不大,這是說「過去未來及現在」這三心,三心了不可得,因爲了不可得,所以「達摩面壁無足怪」:菩提達摩面壁,他也就是修這個三心了不可得。無足怪,有什麽奇怪的?沒有什麼奇怪的,他什麽都放下了,他像一個活死人似的,所以沒有什麼奇怪的。

 「離言說相何可道」:有什麼可說的,叫他向達摩未來時道一句看,說是本來說不出來的,沒有什麼可說的,那又道什麼?這都是禪宗裡頭這個打機鋒,就是沒有一個問題,要弄出一個問題來,來迷惑人。所以「不立文字紙空白」:你沒有文字,這只是一張白紙,空白,沒有什麼。所以說「參得禪時贓誣起」:這個參透禪時,凝然禪師一說參得禪也,他就大喝一聲,這意思就是參到禪就參到禪,你說它幹什麼呢?所以他就大喊一聲,然曰作麼,他說和尚何得贓誣人。

「悟透性具放開懷」:你若明白一切都是自性本具的,又有什麼執著,有什麼放不開的,所以都放開了。

 「青原垂足惹禍事」:惹出來一場大禍。「子孫萬代坐蓮臺」:所以,後人因爲知道這種情形,那麼很多都開了悟了,都可以坐蓮臺的。

HSUAN HUA'S VERSE SAYS:

Past, future, and present,
It is not odd for Bodhidharma to sit facing the wall.
Apart from words, what can be said?
Not relying on diction, paper is void.
Penetrating through Dhyana, allegations arise.
Realizing the nature is complete, one lets go.
Ching Ywan put down his leg and calamity ensued.
Descendants of ten thousands sit on
lotus platforms.

Hsuan Hua's verse says:

Past, future, and present. Don't you think this calamity is great? This is referring to the three minds  of the past, future and present! These three minds  cannot be got at. Therefore, it is not odd for  Bodhidharma to sit facing the wall; The reason  Bodhidharma sat facing the wall was just to realize  the nonexistence of these three minds. What is so  strange about that? There is nothing unusual about it.  He put everything down, and acted just like a living  dead person. So, there is nothing strange about it.

Apart from words, what can be said? What is there to speak of? He was asked to say something before Bodhidharma arrived. Actually, there is nothing to  say, so why should he say anything? All this is just  the repartee of the Dhyana School, which creates  trouble where there is none, in order to baffle others.  Not relying on diction, paper is void. You are  wordless, just like a blank sheet of paper with nothing  on it. Penetrating through Dhyana, allegations arise.  When Dhyana Master Ning Ran said he had attained  Dhyana, he shouted to say, "If you can attain Dhyana,  then you attain Dhyana, that's all. Why talk about it?  "When he hollered, Ran asked, "What are you  doing?" He replied, "How can you, the monk, plant  stolen goods in my place?"

Realizing the nature is complete, one lets go. If you understand that everything is replete within our own nature, what is there to attach to? What is it that you  cannot let go of? Thereupon, you let go completely.

Ching Ywan put down his leg and calamity ensued.  A disaster has occurred. Descendants of ten thousand generations sit on the lotus platforms. The people of  future generations will become enlightened upon  learning of this and all can sit on lotus platforms.
