A Hundred-year-old High Master Unselfishly Sacrificed Himself; A Thousand-year-old Monastery Is Restored After Disaster

RECORDS REGARDING CHAN MASTER LI YU
OF BAU GWO MONASTERY IN LE JR COUNTY OF SZ CHWAN PROVINCE

Compiled by Myau Shou

At that time in Northern Sz-chwan there was an extensive drought that left the populace starving. The Master suggested using this offering to provide these people employment. His idea was to build a ten direction's large monastery modeled after Bau Gwang Monastery, there in She-hung Province. The Monastery would be run using Master Bai Jang's rules--a daily schedule that included both practicing Chan and planting the fields. The plan also included building a salt factory and planting over thirty thousand trees, thus providing employment for the people.

In 1944 the Master held a Dharma Assembly for Transmitting the Precepts. One hundred thirty-six preceptees received the transmission. After that, the Master passed the administration of the monastic complex to Dharma Master Yu Kung (Empty of Desire). The Master's compassion and vows were deep. Besides propagating the Dharma, he would respond to people's requests and heal illnesses. The Master was able to cure many illnesses that both eastern and western doctors had pronounced incurable--thus turning the dread of winter into the hope of spring.

The Master had various methods to cure illness. Sometimes he prescribed Chinese medicinal herbs. Sometimes he used fruit or other food. Sometimes he just talked to the sick person. Sometimes he had the sick one live for a time in the monastery. His wholesome, clever expedients had excellent results. Because of that, those seeking to be healed came in an endless stream. The countless inconceivable events that transpired were told far and wide.
