ON THE RESOLUTION TO BE BORN IN SUKHAVATI
TO THE BODHISATTVA VASUBANDHU
by Roger J. Corless
Prof. of Religion
O Thou Honored of Worlds! with one mind
take refuge in that great Tathagata
whose glory all regions are filled;
that joyful Land may I be Born!
rely on the Sutras, and Marks
virtuous, singing a hymn
the Vow which is firm and complete,
accord with the teaching of Buddha.
I gaze on the Marks of that Realm
surpasses the triple-world's Way;
is totally like to the sky,
is wide, without limits or bounds:
the Right Tao, the greatly compassionate
is sprung from transcendent good roots.
has brilliance most clear and intense,
a glass, or the sun's and moon's discs.
is naturally set with rare jewels,
is furnished with ornaments fine.
immaculate glory flames out,
suffuses all worlds with its light.
are jewels of excellent grass,
is soft, and bends this way and that;
one strokes them, great joy is then born,
transcends Kacilindikam's touch.
blossoms of ten million kinds
all the ponds and the streams;
mild breezes stir flowers and leaves,
they twinkle and sparkle with light.
the mansion with towers and spires,
whatever direction one looks,
are trees of all colors and hues
with railings of jewels round about;
are strings of rare jewels without end
extend through the sky like a net,
a medley of bells ringing out
proclaiming the tones of true Dharma.
vestments and flowers rain down,
infinite scents through the air.
Wisdom is bright as the sun,
dispels the world's darkened confusion,
the Brahma Sound wakens afar,
is wonderfully heard in all spheres.
a Dharma King, stands firm in good.
Tathagata's host of pure flowers
from flowers of true Bodhi:
they joyfully savor his Dharma,
dhyana-samadhi as food.
from troubles in body and mind,
have joy without end, without pause.
the Realm of the Great Way's Good Root
are equal, it lacks despised names,
women, and any deformed,
the Two-Vehicle seed,are not born.
those beings wish any delight,
is always and fully obtained.
do therefore intend to be Born
the Land of the Buddha Amita.
the King of Great Treasure Unbounded
enthroned upon wonderful flowers,
his Marks and his Signs shine one hsun,
his form is superior to all.
Tathagata's wonderful sound
Brahma echoes is heard in all spheres.
the earth, water, fire and the wind
the sky, he is ever impartial.
divine ones, unshakable beings,
to Birth out of wisdom’s pure sea,
the King of the Mountains Sumeru,
are powerful, and never excelled.
the divinised men, the devout,
round and gaze up as they worship.
the power of the Buddha's First Vow!
who meet him shall not pass in vain,
the great sea of virtuous treasures
empowered to be quickly fulfilled.
the Land of Blest Peace, all is pure,
the Wheel Without Spot always turns,
as Buddhas Transformed,
like suns, yet stand firm like Sumeru.
spot is their beauteous light:
one instant, and all at one time
illumines all Buddha-assemblies
conveys health to all living beings.
rain down divine robes, flowers and music,
incense, and so forth, in worship,
to praise all the merits of Buddhas,
their minds quite impartial to all.
there any realm, which is without
great treasures of Buddha and Dharma?
resolve to be born in each one,
a Buddha to preach Buddha-Dharma.
have written this Essay and Hymn
the wish to see Buddha Amita
together with all living beings,
reborn in his Kingdom of Peace.
