THE VENERABLE BHIKKHU SOBIN NAMTO


      Ven. Phra Maha Sobin Namto, known as Sopako, his religious name, was born on December II, 1931, in Mahasarakarn Province in the northeast region of Thailand. At ten years of age he was ordained as a Buddhist Novice. On July 15, 1953, he was ordained as a Bhikkhu by a council of twenty-five witnesses Bhikkhus presided over by the Venerable Phra Bimaladharma, the Lord Abbot of Wat MahaDhatu in Bangkok, Thailand.
      The Venerable Sobin Namto came to Los Angeles on May 16, 1972 for the purposes of propagating Buddhism in the West and working for the well-being of Thai people in the United States. As the head Master of the other Bhikkhus, he stays at Thai Temple located at 12909 Cantara Street, North Hollywood. At the Thai Temple he presides over the Ordination Ceremony and is in charge as Supervisor of the Theravada Buddhist Center. One of his most important duties is teaching the practice of meditation.
