Speeches from the Opening

8. Douglas Cimolino, The Vice Chairman of the Board of Supervisors of the County of Mendocino:

Reverend Abbot and friends of Dharma Realm Buddhist University of the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas. On behalf of the members of the Mendocino County Board of Supervisors I wish to extend our greetings and congratulations; upon the formal opening of your institution of higher learning here in Mendocino County. As we read of the violence and disorder of man against fellow man in other parts of the world, it is reassuring to know that we have an institution being dedicated here today which is based upon the ancient teachings of Buddhism relating to non violence and peace. While Buddhism is an ancient philosophy and well established in other parts of the world, it is new to most of us here in Mendocino County. As such, we welcome the opportunity to expand our knowledge and understanding in this beautiful setting here. This site which formerly was a State facility will now have the opportunity to be a center for bringing forth the precepts of humanitarianism, peace, and goodwill through the philosophy of the Great Teacher. This is a solemn occasion, this is a happy occasion. The County of Mendocino through its Board of Supervisors welcomes you and wishes you success in your endeavors.

Thank you.

During a liberating life ceremony birds are blessed, given the three refuges, and then released to live out their natural lives.
